Portuguese Brewer SCC Expands Mineral Water Portfolio

Portuguese brewery Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas (SCC) has acquired Mineracqua Portugal from a group of private investors, led by Creative Capital, for an undisclosed sum, according to media reports.

The acquisition strengthens the presence of the brewery in the natural mineral water market in Portugal, boosting a brand portfolio that already includes Água de Luso and Água do Cruzeiro.

A Century-Old Brand

Mineraqua Portugal owns the Água Castello brand, a century-old sparkling natural mineral water.

In 2018, the brand sold five million litres of water, accounting for around 7% of the carbonated water market in Portugal, according to Nielsen data.

The company’s bottling unit is based in Moura in Alentejo.

SCC is owned by the Heineken Group and produces and distributes several beer brands, including Sagres and Heineken.

Sustainable Labels

Earlier this month, SCC announced plans to introduce sustainable labels on all Sagres beer bottles.

According to the company, the labels are made of FSC-certified paper, which ensures that they are responsibly sourced.

SCC is also investing around €8 million in a new filling line in its Vialonga plant, which will increase production capacity to 55,000 bottles/hour and reduce water and energy consumption.
