Mondi Produces Face Mask Components In German Plant

Packaging group Mondi has announced that it is manufacturing face mask components in one of its production lines in Germany.

The company has converted its production line in Gronau, Germany to produce soft, elastic straps that are being used in face masks for medical professionals and consumers across the globe.

The facility is producing a three-layer, laminated strap that binds a stretchable plastic film between layers of soft, non-woven material.

'An Increasing Demand'

Dr Michael Trinkaus, director of R&D and application engineering for Mondi’s personal care components division, commented, “Mondi Gronau is working to provide straps that will fit more than one billion non-woven face masks.

"As there is an increasing demand for such types of face masks, we are building up our capability to meet this demand. By producing this soft elastic strap we are able to produce more volume to meet growing demand.”

The elastic material of the strap replaces a rubberised band that holds the mask to the face, thereby increasing the operational speed of the machines in comparison to rubber which is slower, the company added.

The plant in Gronau makes materials used in hygiene products such as baby diapers, adult incontinence pads, and feminine care items.
