Tesco Ireland Unable To Increase Limit For Contactless Transactions

Tesco Ireland has notified the BPFI (Banking & Payments Federation Ireland) that it will not be able to increase the upper limit for contactless transactions from €30 to €50 from 1 April.

The implementation of the new upper limit would require a manual update of the software used in more than 4,600 individual pay points in 151 Tesco stores, the retailer said.

The scale of the update involves the risk of disrupting the functioning of tills, pin pads and self-scan checkouts.

At present, Tesco said that it is focussing on helping customers to get what they need in a safe, calm and efficient way, and has apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused.

Tesco outlets in the country are offering antibacterial wipes at pin terminals for customers who opt for card payments for purchases exceeding €30.

The retailer added that it aims to implement the change seamlessly and will keep the matter under review.
