Amazon Launches 'Programe e Poupe' Grocery Platform In Brazil

Amazon has launched a subscription-based programme for the purchase of everyday grocery items including food, beverages and hygiene products in Brazil.

After registering on the 'Programe e Poupe' (Program and Save) section of the e-commerce website, customers can receive a 10% discount on items that are part of the subscription programme, reports Valor Economico.

Consumers can schedule the deliveries, at monthly or bi-annual intervals, and Amazon makes the shipments automatically.

The initiative includes products from companies such as L'Oreal, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble and Reckitt Benckiser, among others.

Customers signed up to Amazon Prime can avail of free delivery as well as discounts of up to 15% on selected items for babies and children.

Online Competition

The launch of Amazon’s new platform comes at a time of intensified competition in online sales in the supermarket segment, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the start of 2020, Magazine Luiza increased the number of companies selling supermarket items on its website and mobile app.

Elsewhere, B2W, owner of e-commerce sites Americanas.com and Submarino, bought Supermercados Now, a platform for selling and delivering goods from the company's partner retailers.

However, e-commerce operations in Brazil still require high investments and most operate at a loss.
