Portuguese Wine Production Expected To Grow By 10% In 2017

Portugal's wine production in the 2017/2018 season is expected to reach a total of 6.62 million hectolitres, according to data published by the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, the government's wine institute.

This figure represents a growth of around 10% compared to 2016/2017.

Growth Regions

Most of the country's 14 wine regions are expected to experience growth this year, with the exception of Terras da Beira (-20%) and Terras de Cister (-5%), due to the effects of a late frost.

The Douro & Porto and Terras do Dão regions are expected to achieve the highest levels of growth in production (+20%) compared to the previous season.

Douro & Porto will once again be the most productive region overall, generating 1,605 thousand hectolitres of wine (+20%), followed by Lisbon (1,099 thousand hectolitres, +10%) and Alentejo (1,050 thousand hectolitres, +0%).
