A computer error at Tesco stores in Scotland led to customers being charged just 24p for a beer. The glitch in Tesco’s IT system saw thousands of people rushing to their stores to cash in on the ‘special offer’ before the computer error was fixed. Shoppers were able to buy three cases of beer or cider for just £11. Premium brands such as Magners, Budweiser, Stella Artois and Guinness were available for purchase for as little as 31p a can or 24p a bottle.
With the news spreading rapidly on social media sites, shoppers flocked to Tesco stores to avail of the low-priced beer. Police were called to a Tesco store in Greenock to deal with heavy congestion in the supermarket’s car park.
A spokesman for the supermarket said that all of its stores in Scotland were affected by the computer error. "This was a pricing error affecting only a handful of lines on promotion for a short period. The price was corrected as soon as the error was spotted," he said. (2 Jun)
