Argentina Named As Second Biggest Organic Crop Producer

Argentina has been as revealed as having the second highest amount of land growing organic crops in the world, just behind Australia, according to reports by national news agency, Télam.

At present, the country has 3 million acres dedicated to organic agribusiness production, from which it obtains 170,000 tonnes of produce, representing a yearly income of approximately €177.9 million ($200 million).

The 1,200 members of the Argentinian Movement for Organic Production (MAPO,) – an NGO that has operated for over 20 years – set four legislative goals for 2016, including one for the creation of a national law that promotes sustainable production methods.

According to the secretary of MAPO, Gonzalo Roca, the group opposes the use of agrochemicals and aims at working with "living ecological cycles, which promotes and sustains the soil, plant, animal, person and planet".

Up until 2001, the domestic market consumed 15 per cent of all of the Argentina's organic produce, however, 99 per cent is now exported, primarily to the US and Europe.

Roca added that Argentina’s organic production has a good economic outlook considering the world’s organic food market now surpasses €53,400 million.
