Asda Trials Reusable Bags For Fruit And Vegetables

UK retailer Asda has announced that it will offer reusable bags in nine UK supermarkets as part of a pilot project aimed at reducing the use of plastics.

The pilot, starting today (7 September), will see the retailer offer ‘Veggio’ bags for 30p each in its stores in Harrogate, York, Middleton, Killingbeck, Swansea, Bridgend, Quedgeley and Glasshoughton.

The move will help the retailer in removing 141 tonnes of plastics, or the equivalent of 3.5 million bags, from its operations each year, the retailer said.

An 'Exciting Step'

Director of produce at Asda, Kevin Patel, commented, “This is a really exciting step in our journey as we continue to look at innovative ways we can reduce unnecessary plastic from across the business and meet our target of reducing own-brand plastic by 15% by 2021.

"We know that our customers and colleagues are really passionate about sustainability and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to do their bit for the environment, without having to compromise on quality."
