Earliest Ever British Strawberries Hit Supermarket Shelves

The first British strawberries of the year have gone on sale in UK supermarkets this week, after a Welsh fruit grower broke the record for picking the earliest ever crop.

Springfield Nursery, based near Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, has picked already picked its first strawberries of the season, which are now being sold in Tesco and Aldi stores in the town of Bridgend.

"There is always a lot of excitement about the first British strawberries being picked because their arrival means the start of spring is not too far away," said Jordan Blandford, Tesco's strawberry buyer.

"This is brilliant news for customers as British strawberries are considered to be among the best in the world, thanks to our great growing conditions.”

Growing Supply

According to Tesco, Springfield's production this year will result in around 500 tonnes of strawberries – the equivalent of about one million punnets – and the supply of Welsh strawberries will continue until late autumn.

Tesco says that it is set to begin selling strawberries grown in Essex this weekend, and from the first week in March, the supermarket giant will also have fruit from Lancashire, followed by Berkshire and Kent.
