Carrefour Supports French Fishermen During Crisis

As COVID-19 impacts the global food chain, Carrefour is taking action to support the French fishing industry.

In an attempt to mitigate falling prices, the French retailer has committed to guaranteed pre-pandemic prices and purchase volumes on certain species of fish.

The volumes and purchase price commitments will extend to ten major species, including mackerel, sardines, ling and whiting, the retailer said.

Catering Impact

The move comes in an attempt to ensure the survival of the fishing industry, which has suffered an estimated 50% loss in demand due to the decline of the catering sector.

The company, along with several other stakeholders in the seafood industry, including the Océalliance group, France's leading seafood intermediary, are among those making volume and price commitments.

Carrefour has pledged to keep its traditional fish counters open for as long as it can, and stores that are forced to close their counters will sell packaged seafood in the self-service section.
