Eroski Campaigns To Promote Ugly Fruit And Veg

With the tag line ‘They're as ugly as they're good’ (Tan Feas como Buenas), Spanish supermarket Eroski has vowed to become a zero waste retailer by selling so-called 'ugly fruit and veg', i.e fresh produce of irregular size and shape.

The irregular produce is already available in all shops in the region of Navarra and since their first appearance at the end of February; they have enjoyed a great reception from consumers.

Itziar, fruit and veg manager at Eroski Irruña explained, "They are fruits that might have an irregular appearance (some might be bigger or smaller), but they maintain the same flavour, nutritional values, protein and vitamins than any other we might buy."

Besides that, they have a retail price up to 50 per cent lower than aesthetically ideal produce, offering considerable savings to customers willing to take them home.

Alejandro Martínez, Eroski's CSR Manager commented that the company is determined to give these products an opportunity, as they're "something different from what's usually offered, but that has been grown with the same care, harvested under the same conditions and therefore, of the same quality."
