Fruit And Vegetable Supply In Germany Could Collapse, Warns Trade Association

The German fruit trade federation registered association (DFHV) has warned that the fresh fruit and vegetable supply in Germany could face an 'imminent collapse' because of bottlenecks in supply chain logistics and a shortage of drivers.

The body has handed over a five-point plan to the federal transport minister, Andreas Scheuer, to seek to address the issue.

Action Plan

Some important issues highlighted in the action plan include more focus on driving as a profession, better training facilities, and appreciation for drivers.

The association has called on the ministry to discuss these issues promptly, and provide solutions by constituting a joint working group to take appropriate action.

Joint Initiative

The plan is a joint initiative of the DFHV with BGA (the federation of wholesale foreign trade services) and other leading German associations.

The managing director of DFHV, Dr Andreas Brügger, said that a shortage of drivers could lead to a drastic impact on the supply of fresh produce, and subsequently impact the entire German economy.
