Lidl Portugal Sees 18% Growth In Fruit & Veg Sales

Lidl Portugal has reported an 18 per cent growth in fruit and vegetable sales for 2015, compared to the previous year.

According to the retailer, this is due to its unique distribution system, which involves partnerships with local producers, and helps reduce the time between produce being harvested and making it to the shopper’s plate.

There are daily deliveries of fruits and vegetables to all 241 of its stores, thus ensuring maximum freshness of the product at point of sale.

Lidl Portugal also says its suppliers meet stringent certification criteria, such as the Global G.A.P. ensuring safe and sustainable production. In addition, all shops have a Fresh Products Manager with the responsibility to safeguard the freshness of fruits and vegetables for sale.

It also says that its purchasing policy gives priority to local producers whenever possible. Currently about 70 per cent of its supply of fruit and vegetables are bought locally.
