Lidl Top Buyer of Portuguese Apples Five Years in a Row

Lidl Portugal has been recognised as the top buyer of the Alcobaça apple, the most famous of Portuguese apples, for the fifth consecutive year.

The award was presented by the Portuguese Association of Alcobaça Apple Producers (APMA), representing 600 producers.

The Alcobaça apple is produced in a small area in the western part of Portugal, characterized by a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. The apple has been classified PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) since 1994.

During the year 2014/15, the German retailer sold 2.5 million kg of Alcobaça apple, equivalent to 20,000,000 apples, almost twice as much as the previous year. Lidl also offered the widest variety of apples throughout the year (Royal Gala, Reineta Parda, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious and Jonagold).

Reinforcing the importance attached by Lidl to Portuguese products, the Alcobaça apples are being offered as part of a special campaign in 240 Lidl stores nationwide.
