Seaweb Seafood Summit Adds New Items To Its Menu For Barcelona

The SeaWeb Seafood Summit (#SWSS18), the world’s premier seafood sustainability conference, has added a variety of new experiential learning opportunities to its 14th edition’s agenda.

The conference, which explores an issue of global importance and attracts diverse stakeholders from retail, the seafood industry, NGOs, academia, conservation and government organisations alike, will take place 18-21 June at Hotel Arts in Barcelona, Spain.

In addition to the three-day conference program, attendees of this year’s event will have the chance to participate in a pre-conference seminar, lightning-round talks and a field trip around the host city.

Pre-Conference Seminar Free for All Attendees

The Summit is wrapping a fourth day of programming into the standard conference pass by offering its intensive seminar (18 June) free to all attendees.

This year’s pre-conference seminar will focus on a specific species, tuna— The State of Global Tuna Sustainability. On Monday, 18 June, seafood experts will dive deep into issues surrounding this fish – which is one of the world’s most popular and commercially valuable, but also one of the most highly exploited and overfished.

This full-day program will be facilitated by Tom Pickerell, Global Tuna Director for the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). Pickerell will give attendees a comprehensive overview of current issues, which include bycatch problems, lack of comprehensive management strategies, IUU activity on the high seas, and human rights and labour abuses. Then the group will explore how to combat these issues on company, conservation and collaborative levels.

Lighting Rounds Are Back

The Seaweb Seafood Summit lightning rounds, returning by popular demand, are 10-minute single-presenter talks happening before and after lunch on Wednesday, 20 June (from 12:00 to 12:45 and 14:30 to 15:45). In these short talks, seafood experts will each introduce a topic, provide a concise, high-level overview, and leave the audience with ways to explore it later in greater depth.

Topics include the future of fisheries monitoring, offshore aquaculture’s mainstream-bound momentum, and more. The full schedule is available here.

Registration to the Summit is now open and details can be found at www.seafoodsummit.org.
