Tesco Scraps Best-Before Dates On Fresh Fruit And Vegetables

Tesco has said that it plans to scrap best-before dates on more than a hundred fresh fruit and vegetable lines, following a customer survey that indicated such measures help reduce food waste.

Best-before dates are to be removed from 116 lines, including apples, oranges, cabbages and asparagus.

The measure follows Tesco’s scrapping of best-before dates on around 70 fruit and vegetable lines earlier this year.

Behind The Numbers

The Tesco-commissioned research found that more than two thirds (69%) of customers believe that scrapping best-before dates is a good idea.

More than half (53%) of shoppers also said that they felt that scrapping best-before dates helps them keep perfectly good food for longer.

Making It Easier

“Removing best-before dates is our way of making it easier for customers to reduce food waste at home and save money in the process,” said Tesco’s head of food waste, Mark Little.

“It’s simply not right that food goes to waste, and we’re going to do everything we can to help,” Little added.

Last week, CEO Dave Lewis called for more transparency on food waste at a global level, following the publication of food waste data by 27 of the retailer’s suppliers for the first time.
