The Carolina Reaper, the world’s latest 'hottest pepper', beating the fiery Komodo Dragon, will go on sale in more than 130 Tesco stores across the UK.
Produced in Bedfordshire by the UK’s largest producer of chilli peppers, Salvatore Genovese, the pepper measures an average of 1.5 million Scoville units. Scoville units measure the level of the heat-sensation-providing compound capsaicin in peppers.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, this makes it the hottest pepper in the world, 400 times hotter than the jalapeño pepper favoured in spicy takeaways.
“The fantastic success of the Komodo Dragon proved that Brits are among the world’s greatest lovers of chilli peppers,” Salvatore Genovese said, “but I wonder if the Carolina Reaper will test British palates just a touch too much.”
