Ardagh Group To Convert To Aluminium Cans In Rugby, UK

Ardagh Group has announced it is converting the beverage-can production lines at its manufacturing plant in Rugby, UK , to use aluminium instead of steel. The change-over is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.

The conversion follows recent partnership agreements the group has made with international beverage brands.

During the refit, the Ardagh plant in Wrexham, and additional plants across Europe are set to take over part of the production.

"We look at this conversion as a key move in furthering Ardagh’s overall footprint, and are confident it will be welcomed by our customers, the Rugby plant and other stakeholders," said Oliver Graham, CEO of Ardagh Metal Beverage.

The Rugby UK plant was established in 1989 as an aluminium-can production plant, but adapted for the production of steel cans in 1996.

Both steel and aluminium cans can be recycled without loss of quality, and as such, qualify as a sustainable packaging solutions. As a resource, aluminium is more expensive, but it is more durable and malleable than steel, which makes it the more versatile material.
