Fairtrade Products Generate Sales Of €145m In Italy In 2018

Fairtrade-certified products generated sales of around €145 million in Italy in 2018, according to Fairtrade Italia’s annual report.

An estimated 2,000 products featuring the international certification mark were distributed in 13,000 retail outlets across Italy.

Fairtrade Premium

The sales garnered a Fairtrade Premium that exceeded €2 million, with bananas accounting for €732,000, cocoa for €720,800, coffee for €318,700, and sugar for €212,500.

Fairtrade Premium is a payment made by Fairtrade to organisations in developing continents such as Latin America, Africa and Asia, where the supply chain originates.

It is over and above the Fairtrade price offered to producers and goes into a communal fund.

It is used for improving the social, economic and environmental conditions of workers and farmers.

Trends

Like other years, bananas alone accounted for over 50% of total Fairtrade products, followed by cocoa, sugar and coffee, the report read.

The results confirm that Fairtrade Italia is in line with trends at an international level, aiming for a significant increase in core products that have the greatest impact for producers.
