Germany's government is planning to conduct a major national survey on nutritional labelling, in order to gauge consumer sentiment towards different labelling formats, acccording to media reports.
Julia Klöckner, Germany's federal nutrition minister, said that the survey is scheduled to take place this summer, getraenke-news.de reported.
Different Systems
Consumers will be able to choose between four or five different systems, including the Nutri-Score system, which has already been introduced in France.
Furthermore, Klöckner wants to launch a new nutrition labelling structure in order to overcome the disadvantages of the previous designs. The Max-Rubner-Institut, which has already examined existing models, is currently working on this proposed system.
The debate about food labelling is "emotionally and ideologically" charged, according to the ministry.
Ministers also pointed out that European states will only be able to implement such a system on a voluntary basis, due to a lack of a unified regulation system throughout Europe.
