Lidl Denmark Introduces Reusable Bags For Fruit And Vegetables

Lidl has announced that it has introduced reusable net bags for fruit and vegetables in all its 119 outlets across Denmark.

The initiative is expected to reduce the consumption of single-use fruit and vegetables bags by around 20%.

'A More Reusable Choice'

"The new nets are introduced as a supplement to our range of carrier bags and represent a more reusable choice than the traditional thin plastic fruit and vegetable bags, as they can be used again and again," said Mikko Forsström, CCO of Lidl Denmark.

The new bags, priced at DKK 5 a pair, can be washed in washing machines.

Lidl has pledged to donate a part of the proceeds from the sales of these bags to its strategic partner, Plastic Change.

'A Smart And Simple Solution'

Chairman of the board and founder of Plastic Change, Henrik Beha Pedersen, said, "Lidl's Green Bags are a smart and simple solution to how we can reduce the use of disposable bags when we buy fruit and vegetables.

"Lidl's donation goes especially to our dissemination work and to create educational and visual awareness campaigns aimed at children and young people, among other things," he added.

A First In Denmark

The move makes Lidl the first retailer in Denmark to offer a reusable alternative to disposable plastic bags used in the sale of loose fruit and vegetables.

The move is a part of Lidl's plastic strategy to phase out single-use plastics and introduce recyclable alternatives across its operations.

"As part of our plastic strategy, we have already phased out disposable plastic bags from all our stores, announced the phasing out of several disposable plastic products from 2019, cut down on packaging for several products and removed all plastic suction pipes in bulk from the product range," Forsström added.
