Makro Portugal Rolls Out Environmentally Friendly Products

Cash and carry operator Makro Portugal is increasing its range of eco-friendly SKUs and packaging in a bid to reduce plastic in its stores nationwide.

The new range includes environmentally friendly items, from organic food, biodegradable packaging, to dishes and cutlery. It also includes non-food items such as laundry and multi-purpose detergents made with olive oil.

Significantly, the outer carton of such detergents is made from fully biodegradable cardboard.

These products are composed of completely natural ingredients made from sugarcane bagasse (the dry pulpy residue left after juice extraction), palm leaf, or olive oil. The bagasse is 100% biodegradable and compostable, is tougher than plastic, and withstands higher temperatures.

The olive oil used in detergents does not contain parabens, petroleum products, flavourings or colorants. It is also 100% biodegradable, as are the carton packs themselves.

Private-Label Products

The company's private-label products promote a more sustainable environment and fulfil global sustainability trends, Makro said in a statement.

This attracts even more customers to these eco-friendly products, who may not have purchased them before due to lack of products, a dearth of information about alternatives, and significant price differences.

According to Makro Portugal, the wide range of these products, especially those from the HoReCa segment, aims to make the retail environment more sustainable and healthy. The retailer plans to extend its offer with new items in the future.
