  • Maxima Latvija has added a special paper bag to its range of environmentally-friendly grocery bags, following on a poll conducted on social media.

The compostable paper-grocery bag, chosen by Maxima’s social media followers, features a folk-inspired theme, and uses humour to encourage consumers to consider eco-friendly packaging options.

    Alternative Packaging Options

Maxima Latvija board member, Jānis Vanags, explained, “Each and every Maxima customer has the option to take care of the environment, both by choosing environmentally-friendly products from our wide selection as well as environmentally-friendly packaging.

“Previously, we encouraged shoppers to rethink their plastic bag consumption by using them less when buying loose fruits and vegetables. Now we have another alternative in our stores, and we hope that customers will introduce environmentally-friendly habits into their daily lives.”

    Change Of Preferences

A Facebook survey conducted by Maxima, in autumn of this year, revealed that around 65% of the respondents preferred eco-friendly alternatives over both plastic bags and bags made from recycled material.

Maxima Latvija was one of the first retailers in 2008 to phase out free, large plastic bags.

It has also replaced polyethylene bags with compostable EPI bags, and offers customers the option to buy cloth bags and cardboard boxes.
