Nestlé Italia To Develop Sustainable Packaging Solutions

Nestlé Italia has teamed up with the Federico II University in Naples for developing sustainable packaging solutions.

The collaboration will see the development of eco-friendly packaging materials suitable for preserving food, and improvisation in production processes in existing packaging plants.

Sustainability Targets

The partnership is part of Nestlé's commitment to switch to packaging that is 100% recyclable or reusable by 2025.

In Italy, the food giant is already using 95% recyclable materials in its product packaging, in line with its targets.

Nestlé will have access to the university's department of chemical sciences, which is a centre of excellence in the field of polymer science.

It has the resources and know-how necessary to carry out scientific research in developing innovative polymeric materials.

International Partnerships

To achieve its 2025 target, Nestlé is relying on international partnerships to develop cutting-edge solutions to support sustainable packaging.

The contribution of Federico II University of Naples is part of a series of international partnerships.

It has collaborated with Chicago-based PureCycle Technologies, a specialist in removing colors, smells, and contaminants from plastic waste and converting it to a virgin resin.

It has also joined forces with Georgia-based Danimer Scientific to develop a recyclable and biodegradable bottle.

A decade ago, as part of the Axia project, Federico II received Nestlé's support for research into new polymeric materials for food packaging.
