Sustainability plays an important role for most German shoppers when choosing a product, according to a representative survey by the 'Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut e.V.' (dvi).
Nearly 70% of respondents said that they chose to refrain from buying a product on at least one occasion because the packaging was not sustainable enough, while close to one in five are doing that regularly.
Detailed Results
Some 19.3% of the Germans usually pay great attention to the sustainability of product packaging, while 30.5% state that sustainable packaging doesn't play a role in their purchasing decisions.
"The latest dvi poll shows that packaging not only plays a key role in protecting products, but is also critical to consumers' buying decisions. The industry is aware of the signs of the times and is on the right track with numerous innovative solutions, meeting the wishes and demands of the population," said Kim Cheng, the managing director of Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut.
Packaging Day
Coinciding with the annual Packaging Day, which took place on June 6, the dvi showcased an exhibition of sustainable packaging innovations.
Among others, this exhibition highlighted the efforts the packaging industry is making to use more recycled materials as well as reduce packaging and plastic usage.
This year's Packaging Day was implemented under the motto 'Verpackung- Zwischen Ruf und Wirklichkeit' (Packaging- between reputation and reality).
