Switzerland's Migros Takes Further Measures To Reduce Waste

In a bid to further decrease the amount of waste that it produces, Swiss retailer Migros is planning to replace plastic packaging of at least ten popular convenience food lines with cardboard packaging, according to reports.

Migros is going to introduce the new cardboard packaging this summer, for several food-to-go SKUs, including sandwiches, 20Min.ch reported. Moreover, containers for ready-made salads and Birchermuesli now consist of at least 75% recycled PET.

Reusable Trays

Migros has also commenced using reusable trays for restaurants and takeaways, it reported, with consumers encouraged to bring their own containers to service counters.

With its anti-plastics offensive, the retailer wants to save more than 170 tonnes of new plastic material each year. It also wants to save or ecologically optimise 6,000 tonnes of packaging material by the end of next year, according to one of the 65 pledges included in its Generation M sustainability programme.

Furthermore, Migros announced in April that it had succeeded in closing the material cycle for PET bottles of certain products, and it wants to achieve a 100% recycling target for mineral water by 2025.
