Tesco Launches Small Wine Bottle Sizes For Millennials

British retailer Tesco has announced the launch of small wine bottle sizes in a bid to appease younger consumers, as well as helping shoppers manage portions and reduce waste.

Available in a range of 37 wines, the new sizes include the 50cl bottle, which holds the equivalent of four glasses, and the 37.5cl bottle, which holds three glasses.

Some wines include Tesco Finest* New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, which costs £5.50 for 50cl, and Tesco Finest* Rioja Reserva, which rings in at £6.25 for 50cl.

Drinking Less

The move came after research from retail data agency Kantar and the British Beer and Pub Association found that, in 2017, alcohol consumption in the British public is declining, with most drinking, on average, one less alcoholic drink weekly.

Young adult consumers are often interested in a healthier lifestyle than that of their parents, Tesco said, and, as such, are drinking less frequently or imbibing smaller portions.

Tesco’s product developer, Alexandra Runciman, commented on the change, "We are currently seeing an increase in the number of shoppers wanting to enjoy a smaller amount of wine or a midweek treat without having to purchase and potentially waste a full-size bottle.

"Millennials, in particular, are generally more concerned about the quantity of alcohol that they drink, and so we hope this new range will help them manage portion control," Runciman added.

Tesco has also expanded its Finest* wine range with an additional nine products, which will be available in up to 2,000 stores throughout the UK and online.

This includes Tesco Finest* Amarone, ‘a super-premium, full-bodied Italian red wine with rich, dark berry flavours’ for £18, and Tesco Finest* Sauvignon Blanc Fumé from New Zealand, which is partially fermented and aged in oak.
