Waitrose Launches Pasta Products With Packaging Made From Food Waste

British grocer Waitrose is launching two new gluten-free fusilli pastas, with the packaging for the products in part made from food waste.

As some peas and pulses don't make the grade during the production of this pasta, instead of being discarded, they are used to help create the box in which the pasta comes.

This new environmentally-friendly packaging, made from 15 per cent food waste, reduces the use of virgin tree pulp by 15 per cent and lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent.

The result is a box which can be in direct contact with the pasta, eliminating the need for an inner sleeve within the pack. The pasta box is also 100 per cent recyclable.

The supermarket says that customers will be making a nutritious, as well as an ethical choice when picking up a box of the new pasta, with each portion being high in protein, a source of fibre and one of their 5-a-day.

One pasta is made entirely from green peas and the other from red lentils. Both the green pea and the red lentil pasta are also free from gluten.

Jo Heywood, Waitrose pasta buyer, said: “Pasta is such a staple product for many families, so it's exciting to be offering our customers a pasta with a twist, both nutritionally and environmentally.

"We're always looking at ways to cut down on our packaging, use more sustainable materials and reduce our food waste, so we're pleased to be working towards all three of these targets with this new launch.”

Both pastas will be available as part of the Waitrose LoveLife range from August 1.
