Aldi Süd Introduces Sustainable Charcoal Range

Discounter Aldi Süd has launched a range of sustainable charcoal, with which it is seeking to contribute to ecologically and socially responsible forest management.

Since 2018, Aldi Süd has offered only FSC- or PEFC-certified charcoal, and it has now introduced a sustainable variant made from thorn bushes, which is sourced from Namibia.

The charcoal will be available in all Aldi Süd discounters from 23 May, with a three-kilogram bag costing €2.99.

Ecological And Social Value

The FSC certification ensures that the forests from which the charcoal is sourced are managed in compliance with strict ecological criteria.

Moreover, the controlled removal of shrubs and its further processing into charcoal can combat the loss of wildlife habitats and promote ecological diversity in an efficient way.

As well as the ecological aspect, the FSC certification also ensures good social standards for workers.

In addition, adherence to both ecological and social standards is regularly checked by independent controls.

Furthermore, Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord are supporting a project to develop FSC-certified areas in Namibia, with both discounters planning to sell coal from this area from 2020.
