Walmart Brasil Teams Up With Nat Cereais On Sustainability

Brazilian private label manufacturer Nat Cereais has teamed up with Walmart Brasil to develop more sustainable production methods.

The company has adopted several new sustainable strategies through the “Sustentabilidade de Ponta a Ponta” ('sustainability from end to end') project, created by Walmart Brasil.

The initiative promotes the reduction of negative socio-environmental impact throughout the supply chain.

Sustainability Measures

According to Nat Cereais commercial director, Natália Dolzan, most of the company’s suppliers are located within a 30-kilometre radius, which reduces transport distances, lowering the consumption of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions.

In addition, grain manufacturing by-products that were previously discarded of are now used as animal feed, and the factory boilers are supplied with discards of wood obtained from nearby furniture companies, avoiding the felling of thousands of trees each year.

The weight of packaging was also reduced, using less paper and making the same volume of boxes yield up to 10% more. Another key practice was the optimisation of transport for a better use of the company's trucks, reducing fuel consumption for delivery to retail chains.

Nat Cerais has been a partner of Walmart Brasil for 12 years, supplying the retailer with oats, muesli and granola for the Great Value private label brand. In order to meet increased demand, Nat Cerais recently expanded its manufacturing plant, enabling it to increase granola production and start production of its new Nuts bars.
