  • Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has announced that it has launched 'Oma's Soep' (Grandma's Soup) in 90 outlets across the country.

In April of this year, the retailer named the product as one of the three winners of its Product Pitch 2019 contest.

'Oma's Soep' is a weekly initiative where the young and elderly work together to make soups from leftover vegetables.

Around 200 elderly people participate in the soup-making process on 'cooking days' in Amsterdam, Groningen, Rotterdam, and Utrecht.

    Food-Waste Prevention

Founded by two entrepreneurs, Max and Robert, 'Oma's Soep' prevents food waste and provides the elderly with an opportunity to break free from loneliness.

The soups are then sold to the hospitality industry and companies. 'Oma's Soep' aims to use the turnover from the sales to finance and organise more cooking days.

The soup sold in the supermarket is made by a production partner to ensure quality, hygiene, and volume, the retailer added.
