Aldi Suisse Opens 11 New Stores in 2019

Aldi Suisse plans to continue expanding its network in 2020, with further openings in cities such as in Lucerne and Lausanne, as well as a two-storey branch in Neuchâtel.

The openings are part of the discounter’s ambitious goal of reaching 300 branches in 10 years.

This year alone, 11 new stores were opened, including the 200th branch in Lugano last March.

City Centre Locations

With the opening of branches in the city centre in Geneva, Fribourg, Lugano, St. Gallen and Zurich (two branches), Aldi Suisse continued to expand further within city centre locations.

The retailer also started implementing a new store concept, which is brighter, fresher, more modern and more efficient than before. For example, the fresh produce and convenience area have been significantly renovated and expanded.

Local Products

Around 50% of the turnover of food products is generated from products of Swiss origin, while items that comply with organic standards account for around 8% of the standard range.

In the organic dairy and fruit and vegetable sector, Aldi Suisse recorded growth of more than 20% compared to the previous year. The retailer’s assortment now counts around 1,600 references.

Store Optimisation

As well as network expansion, during its 15th anniversary year, Aldi Suisse will also focus on the restructuring and optimisation of several stores.

Also in January, Aldi will launch the "Aldi organic grazing beef" project that will ensure that even male dairy calves can grow on the farm of birth.

During the first quarter of 2019, the retailer will build a photovoltaic system, the size of six football pitches, on the roof of its distribution centre in Perlen.

Last but not least, the focus in 2020 will also be on fair trade, packaging, food waste and social commitment.

The most significant projects include the introduction of the Nutri-Score system on the 'Good Choice' and 'Freshcut. private label brand products and the launch of the FSC-certified BBQ charcoal from Namibia (100% charcoal, 0% rainforest wood).
