Carrefour To Recycle Single-Use Masks In France

French retailer Carrefour has launched an initiative to collect and recycle single-use surgical masks in France in a bid to limit pollution caused by discarded masks.

Presently, the retailer is conducting a pilot project in 10 Carrefour stores in the Île-de-France region.

It has installed a box in each of these stores where customers can drop their used masks.

Recycling Partner

Carrefour has partnered with TerraCycle for the project, which will involve the conversion of masks into plastic granules used in manufacturing new objects.

TerraCycle will disinfect, weigh, sort and compress the masks before sending them to specialised factories for recycling.

Millions of masks have been discarded in France since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carrefour added.

The retailer has also called on other players in the recycling domain to come up with sustainable recycling options for masks.
