Italy's Coop Introduces First Free In-Store Nutritional Advice Service

Italian retailer cooperative Coop has launched the first free in-store nutritional advice service in the country.

The service is initially available in the Ipercoop hypermarkets in Turin, Chieri and Collegno, and is managed by Nova Coop, based in the Piedmont region.

As part of the programme, expert in-store dieticians will be at the complete disposal of consumers, who can support them in their choice of products and foods that respond to their hygiene and nutrition needs.

The dieticians will also be on-hand to provide expert advice on health and wellness.

The goal of the service is to improve shoppers' ability to make informed consumption choices and to help families promote healthy lifestyles.

Coop will collaborate on the Info.food project with School of Medicine at the University of Turin, through a training project.

Recent research conducted by 'Okkio alla Salute', a project supported by the Istituto Superiore della Sanità, which had a sample base of 48,400 parents and 48,900 children throughout Italy, revealed that 21.3% of young people in Italy are overweight and 9.3% are obese.

The study found that one child out of three has a weight that exceeds the limits recommended for his/her age.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers bad nutrition to be a dramatic problem and one of the main causes of public health problems on the planet.
