Denmark’s Dagrofa Announces Common CSR Strategy

Danish retail group Dagrofa has introduced a common CSR strategy for the entire group, running until the end of 2024.

It will focus on three main areas - climate and sustainable energy, public health and responsible consumption, and sustainable development at a local level.

The new CSR strategy will be a common thread for the various units of the group, which includes logistics, food service, and the grocery stores chains MENY, Spar, min Købmand and Let-Køb.

It will centre around all business units shouldering responsibility of achieving common goals for society and the business.

Addressing Challenges

According to Dagrofa's CSR Manager, Henrik E Johannsen, this strategy will help Dagrofa to "seriously contribute" to provide solutions to challenges.

Johannsen added, “We do this by focusing on our work locally and our efforts in relation to climate, environment and health, based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

“Because of our finely meshed store network, we can make a difference - not only in the big and medium-sized cities, but right down to the super-local level.”

Dagrofa is closing 2021 with a financial surplus for the first time in nine years.

The company's strategy and financial position are now underpinned by an ambitious, joint corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy for the entire group, which has been summed up as ‘We help globally by strengthening locally’.

Concrete Goals

As part of the strategy, some of the concrete goals include the use of green power, with a target to switch to 75% green power by the end of 2024.

Elsewhere, Dagrofa is strengthening its position in small, local communities, with goals to increase biodiversity around small grocery stores and boost sales of organic and plant-based products and products with the Swan and Keyhole labels.

All non-food products in Dagrofa's own Green Balance product range are Swan-labelled, and all the food items in the range are organic.

Local Cohesion

Johannsen stated, “The local grocery store has great potential to contribute to local cohesion and strengthen local democracy. Dagrofa wants to be a catalyst for the development of inclusive and sustainable urban communities.

“We have a concrete goal to involve citizens in the sustainable development of the local store. This applies to everything from the specific selection of goods to which CSR tasks the local citizens want the grocery store to take under its wing.”

Some of its other targets include are reducing food waste by 50% by 2030, and emerging as a leading supplier of plant-based food as an alternative to animal products.
