E.Leclerc Replaces Plastic Bags With Reusable Hessian Bags

French retailer E.Leclerc has announced that it has replaced plastic bags from its cash registers with reusable hessian bags in all 721 stores across the country.

The initiative, which comes into effect today (21 September), is part of the retailer’s efforts to remove plastics from its operations and will help in eliminating 7,000 tonnes of the material annually.

The new reusable burlap bags with organic cotton handles are priced at €1.50 each, E.Leclerc added.

Practical And Attractive

The bags, featuring a practical and attractive design with awareness messages, are apt everyday use.

Burlap is a resistant and natural material, which can be reused and will have less environmental impact compared with plastic when discarded.

The bags are also exchangeable for life, thereby allowing customers to return used bags to stores.

The retailer is also offering kraft bags in two variants at checkout counters for 15 cents and 20 cents.

E.Leclerc has been working toward plastic reduction since 1996 and was among the first in the market to eliminate single-use plastic bags from its cash registers 20 years ago.
