Jumbo Named Cheapest Supermarket In Portugal

Jumbo has been named the cheapest supermarket in Portugal for 2017, according to national consumers association Proteste-Deco.

After being dethroned last year, Jumbo, which is owned by Auchan Portugal, again regained the title, placing just ahead of proximity chain Continente Modelo.

Proteste-Deco assigned an index of 100 to the cheapest supermarket, where each point above 100 means that the same basket is 1% more expensive.

For the purpose of the study, a reference basket of 243 products was defined, combining products of the most-sold brands in Portugal with those sold under the private label brands of the different stores. In total, Proteste-Deco collected 86,491 prices in 483 supermarkets and hypermarkets nationwide.

Hypermarket chain Continente placed third with an index of 102, followed by Lidl (107), Pingo Doce (110), Intermarché (112) and Minipreço (112).

The annual survey reveals that Portuguese consumers can make significant savings just by shopping around and choosing the cheapest supermarket in their area. In Porto, for example, by opting for the Jumbo in Rio Tinto or Afurada consumers can save, on average, €228/year, if their monthly expenses amount to €150. However, those spending around €400/month will see their savings exceed €600/year.

Jumbo is also the cheapest online supermarket chain, with consumers being able to save €191/year if they opt for the retailer.
