Kaufland Extends Operations In Bulgaria

German hypermarket chain Kaufland intends to open up to ten new stores in Bulgaria, Lebensmittelzeitung has reported.

The retailer plans to increase on its 55 stores in the country, as it looks to extend its presence with the opening of new stores in Sofia and Burgas, which should be competed during the next few months.

In Bulgaria, Kaufland and Lidl, both part of German Business Group Schwarz Gruppe, have been going head-to-head in the grocery space.

The retailers have been able to increase their market share in Bulgaria with double-digit growth.

Kaufland increased sales by 1,224 billion Lew (€652 million) in 2014, operating 49 stores. Lidl was able to increase its sales by 538 million Lew.
