Lidl And Leclerc Improve Hold On French Market

New statistics from Kantar Worldpanel have shown that over the four weeks to 12 June, Lidl France and Leclerc both attained a 40 basis point increase in market share in the French market.

Casino supermarkets and Géant Casino hypermarkets won ten basis points of market share over the same period, while Carrefour, the biggest grocer in the country, dropped 40 basis points.

The retailer's dip is thought to attributable to the closure of former Dia supermarkets, as well as to generally deflated market conditions – SKU sales fell by -1.2% during the period driven by negative volumes and food deflation.

Barclays European Food Retail Equity Research, reporting on the figures, said that it expects "Carrefour management [to] elaborate on its strategy to regain market share in France during its interim results presentation on 28 July."
