Metro Removes Single-Use Plastic From Canteens

Wholesaler Metro AG has announced that it will no longer use single-use plastic utensils in the canteens of its Düsseldorf headquarters.

The group accompanied its announcement with the hashtag #Plasticfasting, and said that it will switch to recyclable utensils, as well as encourage the 5,000 employees at the site to bring their own reusable lunch boxes to work in the future.

Also, from May, the group will implement a deposit system on coffee cups served at the Ríoba Café Bar on its campus – employees pay a deposit of €5 for a reusable cup, and when they return to the café, their cup is cleaned and they are presented with a clean cup.

The group said that it is exploring alternatives to single-use packaging, including products made of sugar cane and corn starch.
