Orri Estimates A Production Rate Of 60,000 Tonnes In 2020/21 Season

  • The Association of Producers of the Orri Variety (Orri Running Committee, ORC) is anticipating an estimated production of 60,000 tonnes during the 2020/2021 season, which has just started.

The Orri mandarin is among the highest valued varieties in the market, and in the first weeks of the season, its price is already topping the highest values reached in previous years.

As ORC’s manager, Guillermo Soler, points out, the rains during autumn and the beginning of winter have benefited the growth of this variety, and the perspectives regarding the calibre of this fruit are good, "which, added to its excellent organoleptic properties, differentiates the Orri mandarin from the rest and makes it stand out as a premium quality product".

Demand is also expected to remain high "because society demands even more locally grown fruit with high quality, and the Orri mandarin meets those requirements," Soler added.

The variety is about to reach its production limits, approximately 80,000 tonnes, because production licenses have been exhausted in Spain and Portugal, the only countries in Europe where it can be produced legally.

The Orri mandarin is marketed mainly in France, Great Britain, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

"Despite the great success garnered by Orri mandarins in European markets, which has been observed in market research that we’ve conducted recently at ORC, we’ve detected that there’s still great potential for growth at a national level," Soler remarked.

Regarding these forecasts, during the current campaign, a very powerful promotional activity will be developed, focusing on the main wholesale markets, distribution chains and more than 8,000 greengrocers, in which points of sale will be supplied with display elements identifying the variety.

The Orri variety is preferred for its supreme quality, its low seed content and its fine, melting and very juicy texture.

The fruits, of good size, with soft and smooth skin and an intense orange colour, are easy to peel, although they have a very resistant and firm skin that guarantees an optimal conservation both in the tree and post-harvest – a characteristic that allows them to be preserved naturally in excellent conditions between the months of January and May.
