A Tesco Extra car park in Dumfries in the UK has been resurfaced with recycled plastic that is equivalent to the weight of 225,000 plastic carrier bags, the retailer said in a press release.
This project makes Tesco the first supermarket in the UK to have developed a car park using recycled plastic.
The project, carried out in partnership with 'plastic road' supplier MacRebur, has saved more than 900kgs of plastic from going to landfills.
Sustainability Goals
The move is part of the retailer’s aim to promote a sustainable closed loop system, reduce carbon footprint and come up with innovative ideas to use discarded plastic.
“We are working hard to reduce plastics and re-use and recycle wherever possible. Reusing waste plastics in this way is another example of how Tesco is innovating in the war against waste,” said Tesco’s head of environment, Kene Umeasiegbu.
Tesco was the first major retailer to remove single-use, 5p carrier bags from its stores last year. This move resulted in cutting down the sale of single use plastic bags in Tesco by more than half.
The new road surface will be tested through the winter and the supermarket chain said that it hopes to work with MacRebur on similar projects in the future.
