World's Top 250 Retailers Post Revenue Of $4.53 Trillion, Up 2.7%

The world's top 250 retailers posted an aggregate retail revenue of $4.53 trillion in full year 2017, up 2.7% on a year earlier, according to the latest Global Powers of Retailing report from Deloitte.

The average size (in retail revenue terms) of the Top 250 retailers is now $18.1billion, up from $17.6 billion a year earlier. Across a five-year period, the CAGR for the top 250 retailers was 3.3%.

Unveiling its report, Deloitte said Europe has the highest number of Top 250 retailers, with 87 companies based in the region (34.8%), up from 82 on the previous year.

Retailers from Europe’s largest markets namely Germany, UK and France, contributed two-thirds of the total regional revenue in full-year 2017. Germany has the largest companies in the report, with an average size of US$24.7 billion, closely followed by France with an average size of $24.2 billion.

Top Of The Pops

In terms of the top ten retailers in the list, Walmart retained its position as the world's largest retailer, with an improvement in retail revenue growth of 3.0%, boosted by the acquisition of firms such as Jet.com and Moosejaw.

Costco, in second, which saw an 8.7% increase in retail revenue, and Kroger, in third, with 3.2% revenue growth, also retain their places.

Elsewhere in the top ten, Amazon (with a 25.3% increase in retail revenue) overtakes Lidl owner Schwarz Group (which saw growth of 7.4%) in fourth place. Home Depot rises to sixth (+6.7% in retail revenue), with Walgreens Boots Alliance dropping two places to seventh (+2.1%).

Discounter Aldi Einkauf GmbH retains eighth place (+7.7%), with pharmacy chain CVS, despite recording a decline in sales of 2.1%, rising a place to ninth. Tesco rounds off the top ten, with an increase in sales of 2.8% in the period.

Outside of the top ten, there are positive moves for Ahold Delhaize, up three places to 11th; Target, up one place to 12th; Edeka, up two places to 17th and Rewe, up three places to 19th.
