Agromousquetaires Welcomes Abattoir Surveillance Legislation

Agromousquetaires, a subsidiary of French retailer Groupement des Mousquetaires, has welcomed a decision by the Assemblée Nationale to make operating an abattoir without video surveillance in France illegal.

Though the new law will not come into effect until 2018, the French retail chain has decided to bring in CCTV to its Vitré en Bretagne slaughterhouse this year. The company controls six such sites across France.

In a statement, the Groupement des Mousquetaires said that it believes the new law will help instil 'respect for abattoir regulations,' adding that it hopes it will 'encourage good practice, and restore consumer confidence in meat processing.'

Other retailers have been taking notice of consumers' growing concern for animal welfare. German retailers Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd launched a new animal welfare label recently, which will be introduced in the second half of 2017 and apply to a range of milk-based drinks.
