  • UK retailer Asda has launched a month-long national food drive across its stores to help people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The retailer has called on consumers to donate food and essential hygiene items to help the less fortunate.

The donations will go to local food banks that are part of the Trussell Trust network as well as independent charities, the retailer added.

Chief executive of the Trussell Trust, Emma Revie, said, “Since the outbreak of coronavirus, more people have needed food banks than ever before.

“Our network is working hard to make sure emergency help is there for people unable to afford the essentials, but we need your support in Asda stores this month.”

Food banks across the Trussell Trust network have seen an 89% rise in demand compared to April of last year.

    Shelf-Edge Signs

Asda will also introduce shelf edge signs that will indicate items that the local food bank is most in need of each week.

The signs will help customers in choosing items that they wish to donate.

Campaign manager at Asda, Kloe Tegg, said, “I want to thank our customers, colleagues for continuing to support our 'Fight Hunger Create Change programme, and in particular this year as we strive to help those who’ve been affected by 'the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These donations are making a real difference in their local community, as well as on a larger scale as we support work to tackle the drivers of hunger across the UK.”
