Cermaq Says Aquaculture Is 'Key Part' Of Future Food Systems

The chief executive of Norwegian fish farming company Cermaq, has said that aquaculture will play a key role in transforming food systems in the future. Geir Molvik made the statement during the 'Food Can Fix It' panel at the EAT forum in Stockholm.

“Aquaculture is the source of animal protein with the lowest carbon footprint, and this fact tells us that aquaculture must be a key part of the future food system,” he said.

Cermaq has integrated the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its company strategy. It is also involved in a series of business partnerships which cover three dimensions:

  • The salmon farming industry, including customers and suppliers
  • The seafood industry, which includes the fishing industry
  • The wider food sector

Responsibility

“It is also a huge market opportunity – for all seafood, and that is very encouraging," added Molvik. "We need to do things right, it will make our businesses succeed but it’s also necessary for achieving the SDGs."

“We will all be heavily impacted if we do not reach the SDGs. Aquaculture is already directly impacted by the effects of global warming – increasing sea temperatures impact our fish and the waters they live in.”

He concluded that as industry leaders, they have a responsibility to “find the solutions for producing sufficient healthy food in a sustainable way for the future".

"There are clearly business opportunities here”.
