Coop Sweden To Stop Receiving Fish Deliveries In Styrofoam Boxes

Coop Sweden has announced that it will not accept fish delivered by suppliers in styrofoam boxes from 1 June.

The move aims to reduce the risk of plastic getting into the sea and lakes, the company said.

Alternative Solution

From now on, the retailer will accept deliveries of fish in manual fish dishes in cardboard boxes.

In spring of this year, Coop communicated its decision about fish deliveries to its three primary suppliers.

Category and purchasing manager at Coop, Staffan Fri, said, "I am glad that together with our suppliers, we are taking this step and hope that more players in the industry [will] now opt out of styrofoam boxes."

Ocean Pollution

Around eight million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the oceans every year, with styrofoam being the most common variant.

According to anti-littering group, Håll Sverige Rent (Keep Sweden Clean), around 150 million tonnes of plastic are currently floating in the oceans, which is equivalent to 580,000 plastic pieces per square kilometre.
