'End The Cage Age' Campaign Reaches Million Signature Landmark

The pan-European initiative, 'End the Cage Age', which is urging action against the caging of farm animals, has achieved more than one million signatures.

Among others, the initiative is supported by the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung f.u. Mitwelt (Albert Schweitzer Foundation for Social Environment) as well as by Animal Equality Germany e.V.,'foodwatch e.V. and PROVIEH e.V.

The groups form all part of a network that also includes more than 170 European animal and environmental protection organisations.

Strong Signal

"We are extremely pleased that so many people in the EU are helping to end the cage system. This sends a strong signal to those responsible in politics and agriculture", said Konstantinos Tsilimekis, managing director of the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung.

At the same time, the campaign is looking for more support from the public, as it says many of the signatures recorded to date are invalid. It is seeking to achieve one million valid signatures by September 11.

If this is achieved, the EU commission is obliged to step in and address the issue.

The campaign organisers say that the success of 'End the Cage Age' could lead to a pioneering change in agricultural systems, and could improve the living conditions of more than 300 million pigs, chickens, rabbits, ducks and quail.
