Kaufland Reiterates Its Commitment To Aquaculture Standards

German retailer Kaufland has reiterated its commitment to improving aquaculture, to coincide with the tenth annual 'World Oceans Day', which took place last Saturday (8 June).

The company recently launched the 'Tierschutzstandards Aquakultur' (aquaculture welfare standards) initiative, together with the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung and the biologist Stefan Johnigk, with several other companies also coming on board.

Optimise Animal Welfare

"We want to sustainably optimise animal welfare for all fish species," commented Lavinia Kochanski, head of sustainability at Kaufland. "This is why we are guided by recommendations that leading research institutes have set, setting a standard that brings significant improvements."

Furthermore, Kaufland is paying great attention to the sustainability of its seafood assortment.

For example, it offers only ASC and MSC certified fish and prawns in its private label assortment and avoids the sale of endangered species.
