Lidl To Invest €1m To Install Solar Panels In Irish Distribution Centre

Lidl Ireland is to invest €1 million to install more than 4,000 solar panels at its distribution centre in Newbridge in Kildare.

The project, which will see the installation of 4,364 panels in total, will be carried out in association with Waterford-based company, Enerpower.

Carbon Emissions

It is the largest-ever installation of solar panels in Ireland and will reduce the distribution centre's carbon emissions by 473 tonnes annually, which is equivalent to the electricity usage of 240 households.

Once in operation, the solar panels will produce over a million kilowatt hours of energy, which will meet more than a quarter of the building's energy requirements.

Setting An Example

Director of projects at Enerpower, Dr John Carty, said, "Solar energy has become one of the cheapest sources of electricity and Lidl is setting an example for businesses in this country, demonstrating that they can reduce their carbon emissions while also making significant savings on energy costs and future carbon taxes."

Last year, the discounter also announced plans to invest €1 million to equip existing Lidl stores with solar panels and install panels in new stores.
